is the date scheduled for the release of Space Age Blues, the sophomore effort from Devon Allman's Honeytribe. Allman, the son of Allman Brothers Band frontman Gregg Allman, has blues and rock music in his genetic make-up, but his approach to making music is far different than that of his famous father, Devon Allman's Honeytribe favoring a hard rock approach to the blues, coupled with a jam band attitude.
To be released by Dutch blues label Provogue Records, Space Age Blues features guitarist/vocalist Allman with bass player George Potsos and drummer Gabriel Strange as "Honeytribe." The power-trio pursues a sound that is equal parts Muddy Waters and Sun Ra, inheriting the Delta blues mantle from the former and an experimental sense of adventure from the later. The band's unique mix of blues, Southern rock, jazz, and soul is assisted by guest appearances from musicians like former Dizzy Gillespie saxophonist Ron Holloway; virtuoso violinist Bobby Yang; Memphis session keyboardist Rick Steff; and even 1980s hitmaker Huey Lewis, who lends his underrated harmonica skills to the song "Could Get Dangerous."
In a press release for the album, Allman notes "I had a concept that you could simplify as 'Darth Vader meets B.B. King. Even before I'd written the first song, I decided I wanted to make a statement about the way we live. I love blues and I'm a sci-fi geek, so I imagined a marriage of the two: music with a backbone that's solid and soulful, lyrics that talk about where we're at and where we're heading, and a sprinkling of cosmic dust - colorful, creative sounds - on top of everything."
Allman and crew have been building a loyal, worldwide fan base over the past four years since the release of their debut album, Torch, working 250+ nights a year on the road and playing anywhere that will have them. As a result, they've developed a powerful musical chemistry that flows effortlessly into the grooves of Space Age Blues. "The three of us have delivered an album we feel is a quantum leap from anything we have recorded in the past," says Allman. "Artists and bands get to the point where you either have to stay in the sandbox or go to beach. And with Space Age Blues, I hope we've made that transition."
