Editorial Reviews:

Stompy Jones, a two-horn quintet plus singer Chris Binnings, romps their way through honking saxophone features, Louis Jordan-type pieces, bits of retro swing, some Earl Bostic, and plenty of heated and explosive jump jazz. This is the type of music that was popular just prior to rock & roll and Stompy Jones sounds quite authentic, boasts superior musicianship, and really has the spirit. Irv Ervin, whether honking away on tenor or emulating Louis Jordan on alto, the extroverted trumpet blasts of Robert Dehlinger, a rollicking rhythm section that always keeps the momentum flowing, and the good-natured and good-humored vocals of Chris Binnings all perfectly fit into the style. Yet, rather than just copying the past, Stompy Jones invigorates this music and keeps it from sounding dated or overly predictable. Each of the 14 selections clock in around three minutes (other than the "two-part" Red Prysock stomp "Hand Clappin") and make optimal use of each moment; there are no throwaway tracks or wasted moments. One can analyze the individual selections or discuss the individual personalities and how they fit into the history of the music. But most important is knowing that That's Alright! is exciting, stimulating, and a great deal of fun. Highly recommended ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
