The late Keith Moon was a great drummer in one of the most important U.K. bands of all time, a prankster, and a lord of excess. Since the other members of The Who were doing various solo projects, Moon thought he'd throw his top hat into the ring. In an era of concept albums and arena-rock spectacle (1975), Keith Moon blew a raspberry at all of it. TWO SIDES is a tour through Moon's favorite styles and eras of pop, rock & roll and country, with too many guest stars to mention (though mention must be made of Rick Nelson, Dick Dale and the first all-female band to be signed to a major label, Fanny). He sings a couple a Who classic ("The Kids Are Alright"), an early Beach Boys ballad ("Don't Worry Baby"), sings a country duet with Rick Nelson and covers his "Teenage Idol," and by and large has a wildly irreverent good time. Moon's not the best singer in rock history, but the party atmosphere and the dated everything-plus-the-kitchen-sink production of this album are most charming. TWO SIDES will appeal mainly to Who collectors and fans of early-1970s rock styles.
